A Continuous Scopic Regime
2023
Research Project

Tracing the scopic regime of artificial intelligence back to the development of optical instruments, machine learning is placed into a continuity both in its reception and the concepts it employs, such as compression, classification and scale. The microscope's ability to make unrepresentable objects and relations visible, as well as the discourse around its emergence as a tool for studying “God’s design” and the most fundamental particles of the universe, mirror the current debates around machine learning and its proposed ability to produce knowledge about fundamental patterns allowing large-scale prediction of human and earth system behavior.
